A Dog Walks in Brooklyn
It’s been said that we don’t move to New York City for our apartments. It’s the sounds of the city that play in the background of our days. It’s our favorite coffee shop, the corner bodega, local bar and a myriad of other spots we frequent that make up our home. They color our world with community and culture. I’m Carissa, a long-time New Yorker and I’ve been self-quarantined since March 12th, 2020.
Like many, I’ve been riding a wave of emotions. Throughout this time, just one thing has remained consistent. My Shiba Inu, Atlas, still wants to go on walks. We’ve covered the neighborhood of Fort Greene, Brooklyn on foot for two months now. It serves as both the highlight and measure of our days. It’s just the two of us in my apartment and it hasn’t been easy.
The isolation is hard, uncharted territory. Outside, in the epicenter of the pandemic, it’s even harder to navigate. On our daily walks, I’ve documented communication from neighbors. I collect these bits of connection and hopeful signs from a vibrant community locked away. Words of encouragement, thanks and appreciation abound.
I can’t wait to see you again, Brooklyn.
